Leather Jackets- Cowhide or Buffalo hide, What to clad?

16-03-2011

While buying a jacket, there are thousands of questions that are bound to rise above your head. Other few questions are there in the back of the mind and affect your decision. To buy a leather jacket is a tough decision. It often happens that we are quite sure about all your thoughts just get assorted and you feel as if you are blind-folded.  You have two leather jackets in your hand and you are unable to pick one.

Cowhide versus buffalo hide”, the confusion to prefer which one has lasted long.  Leather jackets that serve durability are judged for their quality. It’s said that buffalo hide that is being used comes from water buffalo while many perceive it to be American Bison‘s skin. It has been seen that generally buffalo hide is stronger than cow hide.   Leather that is used in Biker Jackets is between 1.5 MM to 2.0 MM thickness.  While making of leather jackets, both of these two types are split. They are modified to correspond to the same thickness.  However both these two types of skin have been stronger and they make the wearer fell soothing.  Still it has been seen that the cow hide is a bit smoother than the buffalo hide after processing.  On the other hand, both these two types of leather are equally tough and are able to protect the wearer.

What one needs to notice is that the jacket we buy should be of the top grain leather. Top grain leather is the top hairy skin of the while the other layers are known as the split grain leather.  The top grain leather of both the cow hide and the buffalo hide are both of supreme quality and offer better resistance. This is the reason why one must focus on whether the jacket that they purchase is of the top grain leather or split grain leather rather than worrying about whether it is being made about  cowhide or buffalo hide.
